Charcuterie. This difficult-to-pronounce-but-delicious presentation of all things snackable is trending right now because it's a convenient and easy way to put together an appetizer tray or casual meal meant for sharing.

While officially “charcuterie” refers to prepared meat products (prosciutto, salami, pate, chorizo, pepperoni), in the past few years many restaurants and home charcutiers have used the term to refer to basically any combination of meats, cheeses, nuts, fruit, jams, crackers, olives, breads, and more displayed prettily on wooden boards of varying sizes.

That means you have free reign to get creative with some meat, cheese, crackers, and any other little bite-size food items you want to snack on. What Wood Do You Use for a Charcuterie Board?

Most boards are made from a food-safe, non-porous hardwood wood item like a large cutting board or tray. Other items that make great surfaces for charcuterie include marble, slate, bamboo, and ceramic platters. Choose a size that is compatible with the amount of snackers you’ll have on hand.

Have a big crowd? If you can’t find a board big enough for your crew, consider laying butcher block paper down right on a table or counter and create a big spread from there. There are no rules – create your feast how you see fit!

How to Build a Carry Out Charcuterie Board

The board featured here will feed 6-8 people generously. After placing your order for curbside pickup or delivery, plan on working quickly soon after receiving your food so you and your friends can eat while the food is still warm. (Need to order early and eat at a later time? No problem, our wings reheat in a jif!)

That means while you’re waiting for your food to arrive, you can take that time to cut rounds of cucumbers and thin sticks of carrots, celery, and peppers and gather any other items.

Once you have all the ingredients and your board picked out, place the largest food items on the board first (leaving space in between) and fill in items thereafter in descending size order. Also consider how you present the types and textures of each food item. (For example, put two red-colored sauces at opposite ends or add a soft cheese next to a hard cheese.)

Honestly though, there are no hard-and-fast rules for building a charcuterie board, just loose guidelines. Feel free to play here and make your board however you like!

How much food to include depends on the number of guests you need to feed. If the board is meant as an appetizer, plan for about two wings per person of each variety, more if it’s meant to be a meal. Count on about three ounces of meat and cheese per person. And as for the other items, fill in as you like based on your best guess. It’s always better to have too much food than not enough and leftovers are always a good thing!
