There's no denying some foods simply belong together. Peanut butter and jelly. Bacon and eggs. Apple pie and vanilla ice cream. And, of course, fish and tartar sauce.
What makes our most popular Lenten dish so well-loved? Maybe it's the crispy haddock, flash fried in Sam Adams batter. Maybe it's the fresh, house-made tartar sauce. To be honest, we think it's both. After all, you can't have one without the other.
Long served alongside seafood dishes, this thick, mayonnaise-based condiment tastes equal parts salty, tangy, and tart. While we can't wait for you to come in and order our Fish N' Chips with tartar sauce, we know that some days that's not always possible. The good news is, you can satisfy all of your tartar sauce cravings by making your own traditional recipe right from the comfort of home. Or, if you're feeling creative, you can use your favorite recipe as a jumping-off point for perfecting your own distinct sauce.
4 Ways to Customize Your Favorite Tartar Sauce Recipe
Make It Spicy
Kick the heat up a notch (or several) by adding your favorite hot sauce. Mix in one teaspoon at a time, then taste. Remember, you can always put in more heat but you can't take it out. Other ingredients that will add heat include crushed red pepper flakes, finely diced jalapenos, or chipotles in adobo for a hint of smoky flavor.
Make It Savory
In addition to the ingredients in our recipe, consider mixing in a few other hearty herbs such as parsley, chives, or dill. Minced garlic makes a nice herb helper and will really take the flavor of this tartar sauce to new heights.
Make It Salty(er)
A lot of tartar sauces call for chopped capers in addition to (or instead of) dill pickles. A tablespoon goes a long way, so be sure to add a little at time until it tastes just right. The salty sauce/fresh, flaky fish combo might just become your new Lenten favorite.
Make It Sweet
Consider swapping out dill pickles for sweet or bread and butter pickles for a fun twist on tradition. It might just be the taste you've been missing all along.
